Emilio Merritt is a dynamic Mexican-Canadian filmmaker, actor, producer, director, writer and photographer with a portfolio spanning film, television, and theatre. Born in Mexico City, Emilio laid the foundation for his career in theatre, earning a degree from UNAM’s Centro Universitario de Teatro.
Emilio’s latest project, “Lucky Ashes,” saw him take on multiple roles including producer, director, cinematographer, screenwriter, and editor, highlighting his multifaceted talent. His cinematography work in “All Kind of Weathers” (2018) and his role as an acting coach for “Hasta que te conocí” and “Las Oscuras Primaveras” have earned him considerable acclaim.
In Mexico, Emilio gained extensive experience as an assistant casting director and AD on various film and TV projects. Notably, he contributed to Diego Luna’s “Chavez,” working with renowned actors such as America Ferrera, Rosario Dawson, and John Malkovich. He fondly recalls this project as his greatest filmmaking education.
Emilio’s dedication to short films is evident in his roles as producer, director, screenwriter, editor, and actor in films like “Lucky Ashes” (2024), “I Loved” (2017), “Closure” (2017), “The Operative Word” (2016), “Suite Harmony” (2014), “Farewell” (2013), and “A Simple Day” (2007). His work has been showcased at esteemed festivals including the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival in France and the New Filmmakers Short Film Festival in NYC. Additionally, he was awarded a scholarship for achievement in acting from SchoolCreative.
On screen, Emilio has appeared in popular TV series such as “Motive,” “Billy the Kid,” “DC Legends of Tomorrow,” and “Arrow,” as well as in feature films like “Always Be My Maybe” and “Dragged Across Concrete.”
In the theatre, Emilio has excelled as actor, producer, director and playwright garnering nominations and awards at the International Theatre Festival in Mexico City. His latest production of “Hedda Gabler” in Vancouver ran for three months to sold-out audiences, further cementing his status as a visionary storyteller.

Theatre Creator
Directed, produced, and adapted by Emilio Merritt, the innovative production of "Hedda Gabler" in Vancouver focused on raw emotion and authentic human behavior. Starring Swedish actress Janya Cambronero Severin as the titular character, the play explored contemporary themes of identity and societal expectations. Performances ran Fridays from October 11th to December 13th at the Moberly Arts and Cultural Centre.
